Aged Care and the Value of the Family Home

For Aged Care purposes, the value of the family home is disregarded if at the time the person enters care it is occupied by:

1    the partner or a dependent child

2    a carer of the person who has occupied the home for the past 2 years continuously and was

eligible to receive (not necessarily be actually receiving) an income support payment (ie. one

that is means tested)

3    a close relation who has occupied the home continuously for the past 5 years and was eligible

to receive (not necessarily be actually receiving) an income support payment (ie. one

that is means tested)

It is very important to determine if any of the above apply, as it could be the difference between being considered a “fully or partially” supported resident. This will then impact the amount you are asked to contribute towards your care.  However, unfortunately this can also limit the choice of facility.

When completing the Centrelink Asset and Income Assessment forms for Aged Care, it is vital that if any of the above apply, that it is correctly entered on the form.
